Regenerative Mycotechnology (Mycelium-Based Technologies)

Mycoremediation (Bioremediation)

Mycelium to Heal the Planet.  Mycoremediation unlocks the potential of fungi for environmental restoration and regeneration.

Mycoremediation is an innovative technique that harnesses the natural abilities of fungi to decontaminate the environment, leveraging the natural way in which mycelium breaks down materials to filter or degrade toxins present in soil, water, and air. Fungi have proven to be a relatively cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly means of removing a wide range of toxins from damaged environments, wastewater, and agricultural runoff.

During the biodegradation process, fungi produce powerful enzymes that effectively break down a wide spectrum of pollutants, allowing them to cleanse soils and waters. Through the production of specific enzymes, mycelium can initiate chemical reactions that degrade complex molecular structures, rendering them less harmful—or even transforming them into beneficial substances.

Mycelium is capable of breaking down persistent toxins and contaminants, including:

  • Recalcitrant chemical pollutants (PFAS, PCBs, dyes, etc.)
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Heavy mineral oil hydrocarbons
  • Heavy metals
  • Plastic waste

Therefore, mycoremediation represents a highly promising solution for restoring industrial and historically contaminated sites.

There are multiple ways to implement Mycoremediation, depending on the specific environmental problem to be solved.  Our goal is to develop tailored, efficient, and effective solutions for each situation, as every bioremediation project presents its own set of challenges that require the optimal strategy.

At Mushroom Solutions, we aim to harness nature´s potential to repair damaged ecosystems. We support the exploration of mycoremediation for future commercial applications and collaborate with companies and researchers interested in validating and expanding its use.

We have the know-how to regenerate ecosystems and offer a broad range of fungi-based environmental services.

VALORISATION OF THE SPENT MUSHROOM SUBSTRATE (SMS) IS CRUCIAL FOR DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE MUSHROOM INDUSTRY IN THE FRAME OF A CIRCULAR-ECONOMY MODEL

The study of the exploitation potential of the Spent substrate from mushroom cultivation has been a topic that has always aroused my curiosity. Many years ago, it has been 20 years since I began my research and experiences in relation to this matter, back in 2003, when almost no one was talking about sustainability, climate change or the circular economy, much less in the field of mushrooms...
