Regenerative Mycotechnology (Mycelium-Based Technologies)

Mycelium-based biomaterials (Mycomaterials)

We Cultivate Materials. Not Just Materials, Not Just Mushrooms…

We develop sustainable, eco-friendly, and fully biodegradable materials.

Every economic activity requires materials, and today’s world demands solutions with a lower environmental impact.

In nature, mycelium breaks down organic matter to create nutrients, acting as a natural binder.

The mycelium of filamentous mushrooms forms intertwined networks of hyphae that function as a natural binding agent for fibers from by-products or waste generated in agricultural, forestry and agro-industrial activities whose biomass is available in large quantities

We have developed technology to create fungal biomaterials from mushroom mycelium. Unlike many plastic materials, this material is highly sustainable and completely biodegradable.

Depending on the fungal species, the substrate formulation, and the processing technologies applied, we can obtain a wide range of fungal biomaterials with different properties and characteristics.

These fungal biomaterials possess remarkably attractive qualities: they are lightweight, strong, flexible, fire-resistant, durable, and exhibit excellent insulating and acoustic properties.

The mycelium-based biomaterials sector is a new field with enormous potential for development and growth. Spain, as a leading country in mushroom cultivation and with an abundance of local organic biomass, is an ideal location for this emerging industry.

We focus on the research and development of innovative mycelium-based biomaterials, delivering custom low-impact solutions for a wide range of applications, readily adaptable for sectors such as:

Packaging, Construction, Textile and Fashion industries, Food industry, Automotive, Agriculture and Gardening, Footwear industry, Aerospace, and more.

The development of new biomaterials represents an outstanding alternative for sourcing renewable and biodegradable materials with a high degree of innovation and the potential to inspire a new generation of products with their own unique characteristics, while replacing many fossil-based materials currently in use.

Our goals are:

  • To advance the development of new biomaterials with specific properties and clear market applications, using residual biomass from various agro-industrial activities and mycelium from different fungal species.
  • To add value to diverse residues and biomass, helping companies manage their waste responsibly.
  • To reduce environmental impact and dependence on non-renewable material supplies.

The use of new organic biomass and waste streams, alongside experimentation with various fungal species, opens the door to biomaterials tailored to clients’ specific needs: packaging, construction, insulation… The creation of a new generation of products is within reach.

VALORISATION OF THE SPENT MUSHROOM SUBSTRATE (SMS) IS CRUCIAL FOR DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE MUSHROOM INDUSTRY IN THE FRAME OF A CIRCULAR-ECONOMY MODEL

The study of the exploitation potential of the Spent substrate from mushroom cultivation has been a topic that has always aroused my curiosity. Many years ago, it has been 20 years since I began my research and experiences in relation to this matter, back in 2003, when almost no one was talking about sustainability, climate change or the circular economy, much less in the field of mushrooms...
